On the initiative of the member of the Federation Council, the Russian Jewish Congress president Vladimir Sloutsker the upper chamber of the Russian parliament put out an official statement taking a grave view of the application of a group of “representatives of patriotic society” including a number of State Duma deputies to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation demanding to prohibit the activity of Jewish organizations in this country. The chairman of the Federation Council Sergey Mironov read the text of the statement to the journalists on the 9th of February. The statement goes as follows: “The Federation Council strongly condemns the application of a group of people to the General Prosecutor demanding to prohibit the activity of all Jewish religious and national associations as extremist ones. We do not think it possible to pass over this fact and our position lies in absolute defense of the constitutional rights of the citizens of the Russian Federation as well as in the choice of religion, development and cross-fertilization of national cultures”. According to Sergey Mironov, the Federation Council as a chamber of regions will contribute to conducting a wide and permanent public dialogue promoting religious tolerance, mutual respect, unity and solidarity of the peoples of the Russian Federation”. It is stressed in the statement, that “the year of the 60th anniversary of the Victory of our people in the Second World War obliges us to pay tribute to both alive and dead who saved the country from fascism and makes us remember the contribution to the victory of the representatives of all nations and peoples of this country. The memory of the war also asks all the citizens of multinational country and the officials of law-enforcement sphere in particular to provide efficient resistance to any steps discrediting the constitutional rights and freedoms of the citizens of this country”.
